Abstract

 

This study aimed to: (1) knowing the background of a candidate’s life before becoming a monk novices, (2) to the learning process of education and utilization of leisure time novices, and (3) knowing the types of community service that can be attended by the novices.

This study used a qualitative approach. Data collected by notes techniques: interviews, observation, and documentation. Research subjects were novices who live in the Mendut monastery, Magelang; and teachers. Data validity checking techniques used triangulation techniques. Data analysis techniques include: data reduction, data display, and conclusion.

The results showed that: (a) The last formal education possessed by novices is the high school, ie STM and SMA, (b) motivation of the monks in LPS STI program is to live happily, achieve inner progress, and serve the community, (c ) daily activities novices tend to follow a constant pattern, follow the specific rules of monastic life, (d) the learning process is conventionally done because of the principle of simplicity and effectiveness of learning, (e) use of leisure time is filled by novices to learn the computer, reading, memorize the rules, and go to the temple to simply discard saturation, (f) the role of monks in the form of community service ministry to the faithful to recite the prayer house when there are family people who died and went down to the villages as a venue for training to perform in front the public.
